Math Inquiry Information for this Year!

Here is a link to our shared folder: Math Resources and a link to our blog.

An interesting article...

Here is an article that addresses common core curriculum in the United States for math, but is appropriate for our purposes too as it looks at the interesting topic of memorization and procedure versus real understanding:

Thoughts on Math Instruction...

Check out this interesting article in The New York Times:

"The Problem with Math Problems: We're Solving Them Wrong"

I think this is my favourite part:
"If we teach kids math without understanding, we build on a house of cards.”
"That house of cards will be fragile, and liable to collapse, when students move from elementary mathematics to complex problem-solving."

AWESOME IDEA!!

Check out this awesome idea Cheryl Boland on Pender did with her math class. They all went down to the beach with a page of story problems to solve and they did not bring any pencils or paper with them. Students (and teacher) had to represent their understanding of the problem using materials found around them.

Working with Fractions

During our Math Inquiry project teachers discussed how they often find that students struggle with concepts related to fractions (at all grade levels).

Here is a link to some pretty fun activities that explore the idea of "fractals":
  1. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop.
Activities include art projects and hands on model representations.

New Resources

These resources are at the Middle School right now, but please let me know if you would like to access to them, or if you need to replenish your supply of games for social thinking groups!

Math Resources

If you haven't already seen these resources yet, they are certainly worth a browse!

This is a great discussion of how to build up basic math skills: "Fluency Without Fear"
Here are the activities you can do in your classroom: "Alternatives to Drills"

Also, this is a neat blog for all sorts of topics, but this one on multiplication and arrays is particularly interesting!: "The Sixth Sense for Multiplication"

And check out this blog post on "Unpacking an Effective Math Lesson".
