DART

DART stands for "District Assessment of Reading Team".

For teachers, it is a performance based reading assessment (grades 3-9) that they can use to help plan an effective reading program.  First off, it's a great way to get a sense of what level your students are reading and where they are struggling.  The test provides directed questions to get at individual reading abilities such as the students ability to make inferences, locate information, and understand graphic organization.  The interview with each student allows for time to discuss their reading strategies and find out more about where their reading difficulties might be.

There is more information about the program on Faye Brownlie's website.

Now comes the most important part: planning your reading program based around what your students need to practice to become stronger readers.

To help with the planning aspect, here are a couple of resources that might help:

Class Reading Evaluation Planning Sheet
DART Class Recording Sheet
